And it's not a bad debut.
The main character is Sean Devereaux, a detective with Auckland CIB.
He's a sometimes stereotypical detective - with the accompanying flaws & foibles - he's street savvy, sometimes jaded, sometimes skating a bit close to the edge.
Sean is investigating the murder of a 16 year old girl whose body is found in a local park. (He appears to be the only detective on the murder case).
At the same time his next door neighbour, a single mum with a young son, enlists his help - she thinks someone is watching her house.
Devereaux enlists the help of his former police colleague (and now private investigator) John Hale but their aim to help Sean's neighbour embroils them in a vicious circle of murder, torture, kidnapping & police corruption.
This is an excellent debut but there is much of the debut novel about it.
Devereaux reminds me of a young Harry Bosch, whilst John Hale is an NZ version of Jack Reacher.
Nevertheless a great debut and a good read.
I look forward to Sean Devereaux's next outing.
